Job Description:
This is highly skilled and responsible work operating, and coordinating the operation of, a wide variety of heavy and complex motor equipment involved in construction and maintenance activities.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under general supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its emphasis on motor equipment operation and from lower classes by its highly skilled nature and coordination of other motor equipment operators.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Depending on area assigned:
• Operates motor grader and heavy construction and maintenance equipment in street construction.
• Performs finish lime rock work.
• Directs work of other operators in the operation of equipment. Acts as lead worker at job sites, directing the activities of all crew members.
• Plans work activities to prevent property damage and injury. Keeps records of labor and materials, including computer input of work orders.
• Duties consist primarily in the driving and/or operation of heavy construction, tree work and maintenance equipment, i.e. street sweeper, front end loader, payloader, large backhoe, hydra-lift, bucket truck, bulldozer, low boy transport truck, 10-wheel dump truck, trencher, stump digger, wastewater sludge truck, clam truck, chipper truck, steel rollers, and large cranes. • Operates heavy equipment for handling, installation, and repair of large pipes (greater than 4 inches) and for maintenance of open and closed stormwater water course.
• Operates heavy equipment for removal and disposal of material from roadways.
• Rigs material needed for jobs.
• Keeps equipment on truck in working order. Inspect equipment and machinery. Performs regularly scheduled maintenance and servicing work in connection with the operation of heavy equipment. Washes, cleans, and vacuums assigned equipment.
• Attends work on continuous and regular basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, and three years’ experience operating heavy equipment, including some lead work or supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, which provide the required knowledge, ability, and skills.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
1A CDL instructional permit may be required at the time of appointment and a CDL License may be required within six months of date of appointment (depending on job assignment and work location). OR
2A CDL License may be required at the time of appointment (depending on job assignment and work location). *
