Location: The Hub at UF Innovate (747 SW 2nd Ave)
Schedule: 10 hours per week (M - F). We can build a flexible schedule around your classes and/or commitments.
Duration: Summer C
Salary: Unpaid
This is a hands-on role, perfect for undergraduate students interested in biology, botany, or horticulture.
Plants in Jars is a startup that teaches plant hobbyists how to do tissue culture– a method of cloning plants in a sterile, aseptic environment. Plants in Jars is launching a product line of plant tissue culture chemicals in late March 2025 at plantsinjars.shop.
The Lab Technician Intern will assist with maintaining a clean and organized lab space, preparing culture media, establishing and subculturing tissue culture plants, and supporting the daily operations of the laboratory.
The plant cultures grown and maintained by the Lab Technician Intern are used for social media content creation on the Plants in Jars YouTube channel.
Responsibilities:
1. Tissue Culture Support
○ Assist with the preparation of tissue culture media, including weighing chemicals, measuring pH, and autoclave sterilization.
■ Autoclave training will be provided.
○ Independently work on plant tissue culture tasks such as doing sterile transfers of plant material, and monitoring/maintaining cultures. ○ Autoclave all tools once per week.
○ Collaborate with Social Media Marketing Intern to document plant growth progress with videos and photos for social media channels.
2. Laboratory Management
○ Maintain accurate chemical inventory reports in GatorTracs.
○ Monitor and organize internal lab inventory, ensuring sufficient supplies of chemicals, media components, and tools.
No prior experience is required, although basic knowledge of sterile/aseptic technique is preferable.
