SUMMARY:Building a Strong Internship Program: A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, December 2\, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. at the University of Florida Career Resource Center (Reitz Union) for a panel discussion\, presented by the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce and the UF Career Resource Center. Employers who successfully implemented internship programs at their work site will lead the discussion. Panelists include Fitz Koehler (Fitzness.com)\, Donna Norton (Burlington Coat Factory) and Dwayne Peterson (UF Career Resource Center).\n\n \n\nFitz Koehler comes highly recommended by both students and faculty. She founded Fitzness.com and offers a really strong unpaid internship. Since the fall of 2010\, Fitzness.com hosts seven unpaid interns per semester and considers interns as an integral part of the team. Donna Norton\, who will participate virtually\, joined Burlington four and a half years ago and was given the role of developing and implementing Burlington's first college recruiting and intern program. Now\, Burlington's Paid Summer Intern Program employs approximately 40 interns a year from about 14 schools. Their goal is to provide students with a "wow" experience\, which creates a strong conversion rate to full-time associates and builds ambassadors on campus. Burlington's program ranks #3 for retail and consumer products and #31 overall by Vault\, based on a 5\,000 student survey. Lastly\, Dwayne Peterson will discuss the CRC's paid internship program. The UF Career Resource Center hires approximately 40-50 students each year for a variety of business needs. Their interns are given ownership over a specific departmental function or program\, appropriately matched by their level of education and experience and are supported by a comprehensive training program.
